Mrs Rama Joshi
My Story
Mrs Rama Joshi was born in India .She was educated to postgraduate level in
India and worked as a lecturer in English before coming to the U. K in 1968. In
U.K., she gained a further postgraduate degree in Social Sciences from the
University of Birmingham. She has worked as a teacher, a community relations
officer and as a senior lecturer –training and staff development—in the adult
education department in Birmingham.
She has been actively involved in in various community projects, dealing with
women and race issues and was regularly invited as a speaker by educational
and community organizations. She formed and ran a group known as “ Jaago -
for professional women of Asian origin. She produced a number of booklets-
namely “ Asian Women in Britain “, “Hopes and Fears “ , “Struggle and
Success in Britain”.
She has been involved with the “ Indian Ladies club” in Birmingham for nearly
45 years and has held various senior positions as president, secretary and as a
committee member. She regularly appeared in various Asian programmes on
the B.B.C, from 1970 to 1990.
Rama Joshi was appointed as the first Asian Justice of Peace in Birmingham in
1973 and served as a magistrate for thirty six years. She was awarded the “
Outstanding Community Service Award “ in 1997. This was awarded by Dr
L.M.Singhvi -the High Commissioner of India in London.
She has been writing short stories and poems in Hindi and English since her
college days. Her creative writing was revived after having joined -Gitanjali
Multilingual Literary Circle-in 1996. Some of her poems and stories have been
published in various literary magazines in India and the U.K.
Rama Joshi’s first anthology of poems in Hindi is “ Tumahre Liye Tumhare
Bina” was published in 2007. A further book of poems and another of short
stories will soon be published .She co-edited a book of poems in Hindi called
“Kavya Tarang “ and was one ot co-writers on the novel called “Dad ,Mom and
I “.
